The Girls With Glasses prepare for the holidays with a search for the perfect table at the Rose Bowl Flea Market

Fall is such a magical time of year. The leaves on the trees are all turning to brilliant shades of bright oranges and reds and there’s a crisp chill in the air inviting us to pull on our favourite sweaters and coats. For those of us in the States, Fall also heralds one of our favourite days of the year: Thanksgiving. As the title suggests, this holiday is all about taking time to reflect on your blessings and give thanks particularly with the ones you love. It’s the day that kicks off the holiday season: gathering, cooking, eating, playing or watching a game of football, napping, eating, watching Macy’s famous Thanksgiving Day Parade and did we mention eating? Yes, so much eating!

So we set out to The Rose Bowl Flea Market to find the perfect table for our Thanksgiving gathering. Held the second Sunday of the month at the famous Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, this is an experience not to be missed if you’re visiting the city. From vintage clothing and housewares to antiques, jewellery, original art, plants, rugs, bicycles, furniture and more, it’s a treasure trove of special finds.

The Rose Bowl is the flea market of flea markets and attracts a hip crowd. The fashion of the folks strolling through the Flea is about as eclectic and interesting as the market itself. We were enamoured with the stylish guys and gals who dressed up for the occasion. From hipster to classic, quirky to chic, it’s the place to inspire your wardrobe.

There are, however, a few things to keep in mind when dressing for Fall. The first thing is to check the weather, November in southern California can be as warm as a midsummer’s day or as grey and chilly as San Francisco. We were lucky to get a rather moderate sun-shiny day. Summer opted for a classic look from top to bottom: pairing a crisp button down top with a pair of dark skinny jeans. To polish off the look, she added a bold peacock-blue velvet blazer for a pop of gorgeous colour. (Speaking of a light jacket, this is an ideal option when looking to layer.) She then added a vintage pin to give it a personal twist and was wise to wear her Chelsea boots. There was a lot of walking!

I, on the other hand, opted for a brightly coloured printed jersey dress. The bold retro pattern seemed to fit right in against the colourful and vintage vibe at the Rose Bowl. This dress gives loads of style impact with minimal effort; just throw it on and grab a chunky wooden necklace. I also opted for a hat as I’m fair-skinned and tend to burn easily in the sun. In case the day took a chillier turn, I brought a cable knit sweater and wrapped it around my waist so I didn’t have to carry anything (other than the odds and ends we discovered for our Thanksgiving table).

While on the hunt for our table we stumbled on some other great items and pieces that were ideal for dressing it up. We discovered some gorgeous silver utensils, the rug of our dreams, some lovely greenery to grace the table and even a stack of pretty old plates. Finally, we found our table. (We may also have taken home a few other things which aren’t quite necessary for our Thanksgiving feast – Summer found the perfect set of desks for her sons, Rockwell and Phoenix, while I found a Sixties vintage Mickey Mouse sweater that I pair with my Tweed Plaid Blazer for another Fall look. We are so excited to set our table and prepare it for a feast – it’s getting so close we can almost taste it!
