While we love shopping for the latest trends (hello pastel coats), this season it’s the updated basics that have us reaching for our credit cards. Why? Because those essential wardrobe staples work harder than anything else we own. To give them the attention they deserve, our design team has tinkered with the collection, adding a pocket here or lengthening a hem there, while always keeping the quality. Someone who shares our love of colour and print, yet knows great basics maketh the wardrobe, is Chloe Hill, Sydney-based fashion editor and blogger at ChloeChill. Here she shows how to rely on classic pieces to tie together a polished look…

When it comes to basics, a cashmere jumper is as good as it gets! The light and breathable fabric just can’t be beat and is so easy to dress up or down. While black or white are failsafe picks, I prefer to opt for a classic hue like bottle green. Loosely tucked into a playful skirt, this versatile look could just as easily be worn to the office or for a weekend outing. Simply adjust your accessories accordingly – leopard print pumps and a top-handle bag are uber polished, while flats and a shoulder bag are more practical when on the go.

A striped top and skinny jeans are my go-to basics on the weekend, creating the perfect off-duty look. I like to balance the silhouette of a loose top with streamlined denim – this pair’s knee patches make for a cool and on-trend finish. Of course it’s important to inject a bit of personality with fun accessories. A colour-block shoulder bag and sparkly slip-ons are practical and oh-so cute! To make this striped top work for 9-5, simply swap denim for a pair of cigarette pants, or a polished   pencil skirt  – sleek pumps will complete your look.

A well-cut cotton shirt is so versatile and lends a man-style spin to any look. I’ve kept my look classic and polished with a pair of cropped black trousers, but for a modern twist I’ve added sweet metallic flats and a bold printed clutch. To dress down a white shirt on the weekend I’d pair it with denim and sneakers. Just be sure to show your softer side with feminine touches like a pretty pink lip.
