It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Boden basics don’t have an expiry date, thanks in no small part to the A-grade quality and seemingly endless spectrum of colours and patterns. Trends come and go but quality classics last a lifetime.
Kelly Eastwood of The London Chatter, together with her best friend Katy Wickremesinghe, describe their favourite buy-now-wear-forever pieces from the range and reveal how they like to style them.
What do you like about Boden’s Basics range?
Kelly: “You can’t go wrong with a Breton stripe; it’s an iconic style that suits everyone. I also love the metallic thread detail woven into one of Boden’s Breton styles, giving it a unique and unexpected twist. The classic colours of the range also work so well together, giving you endless ‘mix and match’ possibilities. It’s the range that keeps on giving.”
Katy: “I always have room for a Boden Breton and skinny-fit jean in my wardrobe. The bright tees are in beautiful muted tones and have very flattering necklines which suit all body shapes. The long-sleeved t-shirts will be a staple item for me as they are so soft and wearable.”
What occasions do basics work best for?
Kelly: “What occasions do basics NOT work best for?! Good quality basics give you a great outfit foundation – start simple and add accessories depending on the occasion.“
What are the key ingredients to a good basic?
Kelly: “Versatility. I see nothing wrong with wearing a T-shirt or Breton that you would usually expect to see worn casually with jeans, tucked into a smart, high-waisted skirt and worn with heels for an evening out. I love that kind of unexpected comfort and relaxed elegance.”
Katy: “Fit and comfort are essential. I like anything that doesn’t lose its shape or crease too much, a great basic will look as good at the end of the day as it did at the beginning.”
What are the essentials pieces in your wardrobe?
Kelly: “Boyfriend jeans and khaki trousers are my go-to for a relaxed look, pairing them with flats or heels depending on the occasion. I also have around 20 white oversized, soft tees and piles of cropped cashmere cardigans in all the colours of the rainbow, which serve me very well. ”
Katy: “I spend a lot of time with clients through my job working in PR and I’m regularly at art fairs or fashion events, so comfort is key. I’ll always have a pair of flats to hand, ideally ones smart enough to go from day to evening. I’m rarely without a classic oversized cashmere jumper in pale grey or navy.”
How would you describe your off-duty style?
Kelly: “It’s a real combination. From tea dresses with sparkly shoes to boyfriend jeans with baggy jumpers or denim shirts and printed trainers, it’s all about personality and having fun. No matter what, I always accompany my look with a strong red power lip.”
Katy: “Classic with an eclectic twist. I add flair to classic pieces by mixing them with bold extras. Colour is essential, you will rarely see me in black. Coral or pink always features somewhere!”
