It’s time to wave farewell to rigid schedules, lunchbox prep and school uniforms until September – hurrah!
To inspire your family school holiday style (taking all weather eventualities into account), follow fashion editor and founder of style blog The Edited, Erica Davies, together with her son Charlie, six, and daughter Lila, four, as they enjoy a day trip to London, dressed head to toe in Boden clothes, no less.
“This year I have been super organised and planned each of the six weeks of the summer holidays on a week by week basis leading up to our family break at the end of August. It makes me feel a bit calmer knowing where we’ll be and what we have planned.
I love the summer for the ease of the morning routine – pyjamas don’t have to be wrestled off and easy, throw-on dresses and shorts make perfect sunny day wear for all of us. But as we’re spending most of the summer in the UK, we also have to be ready for all eventualities; simple cashmere knits, sweatshirts and lightweight coats are always a style standby for days out.”
“Charlie is fascinated by anything historical – and I love finding a little pocket of London to that will satisfy his thirst for knowledge. We’ve recently discovered the Three Mills area on the River Lea in the east end of London.
It’s one of the capital’s oldest industrial centres which would have originally housed eight mills and seven waterwheels. Now it’s a lovely place to take the kids for a run around along the canal and a piece of cake at the café! It’s a popular spot for cyclists too – in fact, it’s like a little slice of Copenhagen in the middle of London.”
Comfort and style
“This is the perfect outfit for running around with the kids during cooler summer days. I absolutely love the Sally coat. I picked the camel shade, but I secretly want it in the other colourways too.
The pale pink jumper is so comfortable and flattering, especially with the lovely button detailing down each side. Plus, anything pink is perfect because it’s set to be such a huge trend for autumn. My advice? Buy now, wear all year round.
The cropped jeans are stretchy and super comfortable, plus I love showing off a bit of tanned ankle in the summer. And who could resist these shoes? They’re the perfect day-trip flat – comfortable and really cool.”
In the pink
“I’m having a bit of a pink moment. It’s such a lovely shade to mix in with tougher neutrals like camel and grey. I opted for a long length in this simple, throw-on shape – it works so well for hot summer days.
I added a leopard cross-body bag for ease and finished the look with the scalloped court shoes. Throwing a cashmere boyfriend jumper around your shoulders also means you won’t get caught out when the temperature suddenly drops.”
Spell It Out
Charlie loves a slogan tee and this one is retro cool in a lovely colour. The leather hi-tops are great quality and trousers will be practical as well as easy to wear for a whole host of outings. Meanwhile, Lila will wear anything – as long as it’s a dress that twirls! This owl-printed tunic dress is right up her street, especially with her cute pastel cardigan.”
“I love these cropped wide leg chinos, worn with a classic boyfriend shirt in a mix of my favourite blue prints – spots and stripes. The cropped trouser feels a bit more modern – and again gives those tanned ankles a bit of air time. I’ve teamed them with grey scallop flats and the leopard-print bag which I know will see me right through until Autumn.”
“I love Charlie’s sweatshirt from Johnnie B – it’s minimal, but in a brilliant colour combination. It looks great over shorts after a long day on the beach or with denim-look joggers where comfort is king”.
