You’d be forgiven for mistaking this post for our SS17 childrenswear lookbook. So hats off to the first-time models featured, who were introduced to us by long-time friends of Boden, Starlight Children’s Foundation, a charity that grants once-in-a-lifetime wishes to seriously and terminally ill children in the UK. This was the wish of Becky Harris, an 11-year-old girl from Cambridge with dreams of being a model for the day.
One studio set, three hula hoops, two skateboards, five torn backdrops, 143 outtakes and a whole lot of pizzas later, Becky’s dream has been made a reality. The result is a colourful, lively photo shoot that beautifully showcases our new-season childrenswear range.
Becky modelled alongside her 14-year-old sister, Mollie, and was also joined on the day by her parents Katherine and Stuart. We snuck behind the scenes to chat to Becky and her family about how they got involved with the wish-granting charity and how it has helped them.
Katherine: “Becky hasn’t got a formal diagnosis. Her illness falls under the umbrella of chronic lung disease, and she’s managed as a cystic fibrosis patient, though she doesn’t suffer from the condition. Becky gets repeated chest infections, and we manage these with IV antibiotics every eight to 12 weeks, as well as daily physiotherapy and nebulizers to clear the excess mucus off her chest. She’s had every test but we can’t pinpoint why this is happening. It started just before her sixth birthday, and has just got progressively worse. Where we used to go eight months between infections, now they happen every eight weeks.
“Our community nurse mentioned Starlight to us and wrote to our consultant who approved the application. Becky’s always wanted to try modelling and Starlight has granted that wish for her.
“It’s great because it’s something for Becky and only Becky. You can buy holidays but this experience is a one-off; you can’t repeat it.”
“Becky’s quite a poser anyway so she’s taken to being a model quite easily! The only tricky bit for her was not falling off the skateboard they asked her to ride.”
And what did the model herself think of the day? Over to you, Becky: “Getting to do modelling is so good because it’s something I’ve wanted to try and I really like it. I also liked hula hooping and I managed to keep three going at a time.”
